Case Study: CFP National Championship Game

Customer

The College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship is one of the most anticipated and widely viewed sporting events in the United States. For the 2024 championship matchup between the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies, the security operations involved collaboration between NRG Stadium officials, stadium management firm ASM Global, and systems integrator Unlimited Technology. The primary objective was to establish an impenetrable security perimeter for all restricted access points without delaying the arrival of essential personnel.

Challenge

High-profile sporting events attract massive crowds and significant media attention, making them prime targets for potential security threats. The security teams at NRG Stadium faced the complex challenge of securing a designated VIP and team arrival entrance. They needed a robust vehicle inspection system capable of detecting hidden explosives, weapons, and other vehicle-borne threats.

Manual mirror inspections were immediately ruled out. They are notoriously slow, highly subjective, and prone to human error. The venue required a solution that could handle a steady flow of diverse vehicles—ranging from large team buses and heavy delivery trucks to standard sedans and passenger vans. The system had to integrate with existing security protocols and prevent any traffic bottlenecks that could delay the teams or critical event staff.

Solution

To meet these rigorous demands, ISS deployed the SecurOS® UVSS. Working closely with Unlimited Technology, the team installed the system at the primary restricted entry point. The UVSS provided high-quality, full-color undercarriage image scans in as little as three seconds.

The hardware easily accommodated vehicles traveling at speeds up to 22 mph, ensuring a continuous flow of traffic. To enhance the screening process, the deployment integrated the UVSS with SecurOS® Auto, an advanced license plate recognition (LPR) software. This powerful combination captured the undercarriage image while simultaneously recording the vehicle’s license plate, class, make, model, and color. By utilizing patented image de-warping technology, the system presented security operators with a perfectly stitched, distortion-free view of every vehicle’s underbelly.

Results

Over the course of the event operations, the system screened approximately 140 vehicles. Security personnel identified no false positives, and the automated nature of the system completely removed the fatigue and subjectivity associated with manual human inspections.

The combined UVSS and LPR solution created a comprehensive, audit-ready profile for every vehicle that entered the restricted area. Safety directors at NRG Park praised the system for increasing visual accuracy while keeping authorized fans, athletes, and essential staff moving safely and efficiently. The seamless fusion of innovation and expertise ensured that the CFP National Championship game proceeded without disruption.
